Adolescent Pregnancy
and Parenting Program Year Established: 1997 Location: In the community. Duration of Program: 12 Months Description of Program: The Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Program (APPP) serves youth of the Tempe Union High School District who are pregnant or parenting. The mentoring program is designed to provide support to these teens, help with retaining pregnant and parenting teenagers in school, and increase the competence and skills of young parents to care for their infants. Mentors and mentees commit for one year, meeting 10 hours per month. The program is community based. Mentors and mentees meet outside of school, on their own schedule and enjoy activities of their choice. Mentors provide social and emotional support and/or academic support. Arizona Quest for Kids Year Established: 1998 Location: Currently there are programs based at 14 school and community sites in Phoenix, Tempe and Tucson. Duration of Program: Students are enrolled in the fifth grade and participate in the program until their graduation from high school. Mentors are asked to commit for at least 1 year. Description of Program: Arizona Quest for Kids (AQFK) provides students with one-on-one mentoring, enrichment opportunities, and college guidance. Enrolled in the fifth grade, students are paired with a caring adult mentor who supports their academic and personal development. College and career-focused enrichment opportunities, field trips and community service activities are an integral part of the program. In addition, Arizona Quest for Kids provides educational workshops and resource referrals to families, as they support their child's pursuit of a college education. Upon successful completion of high school, having maintained a 3.0 grade point average, remained drug free and crime-free, and met AQFK program requirements, the student receives a scholarship up to the equivalent of a four-year tuition at an Arizona university. Currently, there are approximately 300 students participating in the Arizona Quest for Kids program at 14 school and community sites in the greater metropolitan Phoenix and Tucson. Communities Year Established: 1990 Location: Various Schools Duration of Program: Year Round Description of Program: The Cultural Pride Linking Communities Program is a comprehensive early dropout and drug prevention program that integrates the various environments in which a child lives, the individual, family, school and community environments. The program consists of five braided components that include mentoring and support groups/learning circles for 3-8th graders.

Tempe Police Explorer

Pappas School Mentor Program matches adult mentors with homeless youth who attend the school. The goals of the mentor program are to provide positive adult/student interaction, reinforce the value of education, and develop life skills and self esteem. Mentors meet with their mentee at the school for two hours per month.
