Our program goal is to improve their reading skills, thereby enhancing self-esteem, increasing successful school performance, and alleviating the feelings of frustration and anger caused by inability to achieve. As the girls achieve, problem behaviors decrease. Volunteers are trained by a reading specialist and then assigned to a resident for continued one hour weekly sessions. The focus is to encourage reading for enjoyment.

Duration of Program: 9 Months

Description of Program: The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program addresses the needs of children experiencing difficulty in reading. Our program addresses this problem with an innovative approach through which older adult volunteers work with young children, one-on-one, to build reading and language skills. The program is designed to achieve four goals: promote literacy, build children's self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning, provide meaningful opportunities for volunteer service, and strengthen ties between the generations. The mentoring bond that develops nurtures both participants. The volunteers find the mutually warm and caring relationships they develop with the children to be personally rewarding. The program is now in its 13th year in the Valley and it serves seven school districts in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
