Duration of Program: 2 Months
Hours per Month:
32 Hours

Description of Program: River Rampage is a pilot outdoor adventure program for young people who face significant challenges, offered through the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Through the program, youth with disabilities and at risk youth ages 14-20 are matched with mentors in small groups (one mentor to a maximum of 3 mentees) . The mentor/mentee groups meet pre-trip to participate in volunteer community service projects together. The mentoring program culminates in mentor/mentee groups being brought together for an exciting 7 day whitewater rafting trip in southern Utah led by River Rampage staff and a licensed river outfitter. On each trip half of the teen participants have physical, cognitive or sensory disabilities. The remainder face other significant life challenges (at risk). The wilderness is a great equalizer. An extended outdoor adventure such as a River Rampage trip provides a perfect setting for learning acceptance, cooperation and healthy risk-taking. The lessons of life are intensified because of the challenge, the lack of outside influences, and the need for teamwork and trust. Many mentor/mentee groups continue to meet on an informal basis after the rafting trips.

Description of Program: Wesley Community Center has been serving the residents of Nuestro Barrio since 1950. Over the past 53 years we've offered a wide array of services and we continue to operate 17 different programs today. A significant community problem is the extraordinarily high school dropout rate. To combat this, we're seeking additional mentors to work one-on-one (or with very small groups) to establish positive relationships with our children, to assist them with homework and other school problems. You will be working with elementary and junior high aged children. Wesley is a safe location to work, but our children are impacted by the highest number of calls for police service in all of Phoenix, the highest incidence of gang-related crime activities, and the second highest number of domestic violence related crime activities. They need stable, consistent relationships with adults. We have a comprehensive plan which involves parents. We'll provide necessary orientation and training, and we'll work to assure compatible matches between mentors and participants. You can change the future, one child at a time.
