Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Mohave County Year Established: 1998 Location: Various Schools and in the community. Duration of Program: 12 Months Description of Program: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mohave County provides quality mentors for children. Adult mentors are matched one-on-one with a child in the Community Based program. Adults, college students and high school students are matched with younger children in the school based program. Campus Ambassadors Program Year Established: 1990 Location: School Duration of Program: 10 Months Description of Program: Trained high school students are campus representatives. They serve as role models to students. They conduct presentations at schools for younger students on a variety of topics - particularly for middle school students who will transition to high school. These students concentrate mainly on life skill topics and "adopt" students with needs. HOPE (Helping Our Pupils

Student Graduation Description of Program: The HOPE (Helping Our Pupils Excel) Mentoring Program matches adults in our community who are concerned about High School-aged teens in need of support. Mentors enrich the lives of teens and help meet their need for positive adult contact, and provide one-on-one support and advocacy. Positive mentoring experiences have proven to be an effective tool to help youth overcome the risk factors that can lead to problems such as educational failure, dropping out of school, and involvement in delinquent activities. Mohave County CASA Program Year Established: 1987 Location: In the community. Duration of Program: 12 Months Description of Program: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are citizens making significant contributions to the community by becoming actively involved in protecting the rights of abused, neglected, and abandoned children. Appointed by a juvenile court judge, CASA volunteers are specially trained to speak up independently, objectively, and passionately, on behalf of the vulnerable children who flow into the overburdened child protection system. CASA volunteers (mentors) research cases, assess facts, identify key problems, and submit court reports that summarize critical information. They attend court hearings, provide insight to the judge and recommend actions in the best interest of the children. Project SOAR Mentoring
Initiative Year Established: 1994 Location: School Duration of Program: 12 Months Description of Program: Project SOAR (Student Opportunity for Academic Renewal) is a mentoring initiative that was placed within the Northern Arizona University Gear Up program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). The program is to provide structure, academic support, guidance, and character development within the school setting. SOAR also provides parent meetings, social events, etc. Robotics Team Location: School machine shop Duration of Program: Not Specified Description of Program: The Robotics Team is an avenue for students to learn how to use math and science in real-world applications. We build a robot to participate in the FIRST Robotics competition. The students learn to design, build and troubleshoot their robot. Then they work on strategy to effectively play the game for competition. Teacher to Student Program Year Established: 1990 Location: School Duration of Program: 10 Months Description of Program: Teacher to Student program is one in which a teacher will volunteer to provide more time and attention to a student who is identified as needing some personal attention or being high-risk. This program is not formally structured as the students are chosen to receive positive comments or attention during the school year on an "informal basis". |
