Description of Program: A & A Cottages provides long-term foster care services to clients (girls ages 8-18) who have been removed from their home due to abuse, abandonment and/or neglect. Our services focus on providing intensive academic and life skills training, tutoring and advocacy. Clients are referred primarily by DES. We use mentors to make an added difference in these girls' lives.

Description of Program: FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". Each year on the first Saturday in January, Robotics Clubs around the country are given a problem to be solved and two crates of parts with which to build a robot. For the next six weeks, students, teachers, parents and engineers meet after school to design and build a robot. The robots compete around the county. The goal of the program is to show that engineers and scientists enjoy life just like everyone else. One of our students a few years ago, summed up the program by saying, "You know, it's okay to be smart!"

Description of Program: Mentors provide support to youth living in PREHAB group homes through interacting with mentees in a variety of activities in the group home setting. Mentors act as a positive role model, listen, care, provide educational assistance and social interaction.

Description of Program: GEAR UP is a federally funded school-based comprehensive intervention program. Our mission is to significantly increase the number of low income students who are prepared to succeed in education beyond high school. Mentoring is a core intervention provided at each GEAR UP site. Mentoring, like all GEAR UP interventions and enrichments programs, aims to improve academic performance, reduce the drop-out rate, and increase expectations for post-secondary education.
