Location: School & Community

Duration of Program: 12 Months
Hours per Month
: 8 + Hours

Description of Program: Community Based Mentoring. This program focuses on developing a one-on-one relationship with a child. Volunteers are everyday people who want to give a few hours a week with a child. Being a "BIG" does not require any specific skills or experiences, it just takes a desire to help a child. To a child, spending time with someone who cares about them makes all the difference. "LITTLES" who meet regularly with a mentor have higher self-esteem, are more trusting of adults and do better in school.
School Based Mentoring. School based mentoring is another way to reach children in Flagstaff. Mentors and mentees meet at a school site from 3 to 5 p.m. for 10 weeks in the fall semester and 10 weeks in the spring semester. All one-on-one match activities take place at the school site. This is great for volunteers who have no transportation and/or limited time. The mentors and mentees spend time catching up on the past weeks' events, playing a game or working on an arts & crafts project.

Description of Program: Through intense one-on-one lessons with composer-in-residence Brent Michael Davids (an award-winning active, professional composer, of the Mohican Nation) and other mentors who are members of a string quartet (2002 the Corigliano Quartet), musically talented students living in remote, rural areas of Arizona's Navajo and Hopi Reservation (and in 2002, the Phoenix metropolitan area), learn the rigors of music notation, and the art of string quartet writing, from inspiration to notation, to performance. Students' completed works are performed during a Grand Canyon Music Festival season concert, by award-winning string quartets (Miro Quartet in 2001, Corigliano in 2002). Works are professionally recorded and, along with professionally copied scores, are given to each student in a portfolio for their own use. Through their relationship with Mr. Davids, students learn first-hand about careers in music, and educational opportunities in music. They also learn how music from their culture fits (and doesn't fit) with "western" concepts of music, and how to use that knowledge as a source of inspiration and a tool for use in their own creative processes.
