ICAN - Improving Chandler
Area Neighborhoods Year Established: 1991 Location: Community Center Duration of Program: Not Specified Description of Program: ICAN offers a place for at-risk
youth to go during summer and after school hours. We provide
programs to help steer our youth from gang, drug and abuse related
activities. Our staff mentors our youth on-site in computers,
arts & crafts, homework help, sports, recreation and break
dancing. We also offer field trips during the year to our youth.
Everything is free for the members of ICAN. To keep our programs
free for our youth we rely on volunteer mentors, donations and
community support. Intel Computer Clubhouse Year Established: 2001 Location: Community Center Duration of Program: 3 Months Description of Program: In the Clubhouse, youth (ages 6-18) express themselves through projects based on their own interests, creating computer-generated art and music, designing their own animations, writing and illustrating interactive poetry, building kinetic sculptures and robotic constructions, and designing their own Web pages. Adult mentors serve as role models and support the young people's self-directed explorations. In the process youth become excited about learning and fluent with new technologies, enabling them to develop skills useful in their future careers and, more generally, their lives.
